You can see the hyperbolicity of the group from the curvature of the
model. Or rather, you could if we were laying it flat in the picture.

Some (in fact, most) virtual knots, can't be drawn properly on the plane, but need a surface of positive genus. A simple example is the virtual knot , which requires a surface of genus at least 1 to be drawn. This makes it the perfect decoration for a donut or teacup (as pictured below).
